GLAZED TILES IN OTTOMAN ART
One of the main activities of Ottoman arts and crafts is the production of glazed tiles, a tradition whose roots are going back to Karahanlılar in 9th century. It is also accepted to UNESCO’s intangible heritage list in January 2017 and has been accepted as an art that has to be protected. In Zeyrek, one can see some authentic examples of this art. We, as the project team wanted to introduce children this art which they probably come cross at different parts of the city and make them aware of its beauty. Each participiant worked with an image of a unique glazed tile panel. The panels were given in 9 o 12 pieces, like a puzzle and the children tried to complete the puzzle by sticking pieces to form the panels. This was no easy task and required much of children’s attention on the whole pattern and their recognition of the use of the flowers, geometrical repetitions. While they were working some basic information on this ancient art was given to the children.
