MOSAIC ART FROM BYZANTINE PERIOD
Zeyrek houses important Byzantine structures such as Pantokrator Monastery, Pantepoptes Monastery and numerous cisterns that still exist underground. Many of these buildings have been converted into different uses over time, but the art and building techniques are still present for the observer. One of them is the mosaic art that dates back to earlier civilizations. In this activity in the classroom, we tried to draw the attention of children to this ancient art and asked them to work like a mosaic art master using stickers and a template of the opus sectile floor tiles of Pantocarator. While working with fun using small bits of coloured stickers, the children felt empathy for the old masters of mosaic art and anticipated the difficulty of the practice.
